Stands for your phone

A phone stand holds your mobile at an angle where you can see the screen without having to hold it. The stands on this page are designed for desks, kitchen worktops, bedside tables and other flat surfaces, and are suitable for most mobiles.

Here’s what you can use a mobile stand for

A mobile stand is most useful when you want your mobile in front of you rather than in your hand. During video calls and meetings, it stands firmly at eye level, and the image is steadier than when you’re holding it. In the kitchen, it keeps the recipe in view whilst you’re cooking, and in the office, your calendar and notes are within sight. Many people also have a stand on their bedside table, to use as an alarm clock or to watch a film in bed. A higher position also has an ergonomic benefit: you can look straight ahead or slightly downwards instead of bending your neck over the screen.

Types of phone stands

There are three main types:

  • Foldable stands: Folds flat and fits in your pocket or bag. Suitable for travel and the office, and many have joints so that the angle can be adjusted.
  • Fixed aluminium table stands: Heavier and more stable, with rubber anti-slip pads against the table. Suitable for a desk.
  • Adjustable arm or clamp-style holder: You can adjust both the height and angle, and rotate your mobile between portrait and landscape.

Some models can also accommodate smaller tablets, up to around 8 inches. For larger tablets, see tablet stands.

How to choose the right phone stand

Stability is what distinguishes a good phone stand from a poor one. A heavy base and non-slip feet prevent the stand from sliding or tipping over, and flexible arms can wobble if the base is light, so choose one with a wide base if you’ll be tapping the screen a lot. Aluminium is durable and heavy enough to stand firmly, and rubber or silicone edges protect your mobile from scratches.

Check before you buy:

  • Maximum width: Large mobiles and those with thick cases may require a wider model.
  • Positions: A fixed position is sufficient for watching films. Multiple positions are suitable if you also type or make video calls.
  • Charging opening: An opening for the charging cable, or a charging port that isn’t covered.

Frequently asked questions and answers

What is the difference between a phone holder, a phone stand and a phone stand?

These terms are used interchangeably. ‘Phone holder’ is also used for holders designed for cars and bicycles. Here you’ll find stands for tables and desks, whilst car holders and bike holders can be found under car phone holders and bike phone holders.

Will the stands fit my phone if it has a case?

Most universal stands will, but check the maximum width in the product information. Large mobiles and thick cases may require a wider model.

Can I charge my mobile whilst it’s in the stand?

Yes, if the stand has an opening for the charging cable or if the charging port isn’t covered. The best way to charge your phone whilst using a phone is to place the phone horizontally.

Does the stand work in both portrait and landscape orientation?

Most do. With some, you can rotate or adjust the phone between the two orientations, whilst others have a fixed position.

What’s the best height and angle?

High enough that you can look straight ahead or slightly downwards without straining your neck. Choose a mount with multiple angles if you’re using it for both video calls and watching films.
